The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is an Australian Government initiative that gives eligible children access to up to $1,158 worth of basic dental services over two consecutive calendar years.
It covers everything from routine check-ups and x-rays to cleans, fillings, and extractions — all the important stuff that keeps little teeth strong and healthy.
It’s designed to make sure every child in Australia gets the dental care they deserve, regardless of cost.
And we think that’s pretty great.
Who is eligible for CDBS?
You might be surprised - Many families qualify.
Your child could be eligible for the CDBS if they:
- Are aged 2 to 17 years
- Are eligible for Medicare
- Come from a family receiving an eligible government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A

Please note: the CDBS does not cover orthodontic treatment (such as braces) or cosmetic dental procedures.

No, you need to visit a dentist who accepts the CDBS. At Vital Dental Care, we are proud CDBS providers, and we bulk bill up to the full benefit, meaning no out-of-pocket costs for your family.
How do I know how much benefit my child has left?
You can check your child’s remaining CDBS balance by logging into your Medicare online account through myGov, or by calling Services Australia. Our team is also happy to help you with this when you come in.
What happens if the treatment costs more than the benefit?
We will always discuss costs with you openly and honestly before we begin any treatment. If a treatment exceeds the CDBS benefit, we’ll talk through your options so there are never any surprises.
My child is nervous about the dentist — is that okay?
