Why you might need emergency dental care
Some of the most common dental emergencies we see at our Camp Hill clinic include:
- Severe toothache: sharp or throbbing pain that won’t ease with over-the-counter painkillers. Call us straight away.
- Knocked-out tooth: if you act within the hour, we may be able to save and re-implant it.
- Chipped or broken tooth: even if it doesn’t hurt, the damage can run deeper than it looks.
- Lost or loose filling: an exposed tooth can become sensitive or infected quickly.
- Lost or loose crown: we can often re-cement it the same day or make a new one.
- Abscess and facial swelling: a sign of infection that needs urgent attention.
- Broken braces wire or loose bracket: can cut or irritate your mouth if left unfixed.
- Trauma to the mouth or jaw: from a fall, sport, or accident.
Is this a true dental emergency?
Not every dental problem needs an urgent visit. Here’s a simple way to tell:
Call us straight away if you have severe or worsening pain, facial swelling, a fever alongside tooth pain, ongoing bleeding, or a knocked-out or badly broken tooth.
A regular appointment is usually fine if the pain is mild and managed with over-the-counter medication, you have sensitivity without swelling or fever, or you have a small chip that isn’t causing pain.
If you’re having trouble breathing, swallowing, or opening your mouth, go straight to your nearest hospital emergency department.
What to do with a knocked-out tooth
Baby teeth
If your child loses a baby tooth, stay calm and follow these steps:
- Pick the tooth up by the crown only. Avoid touching the root.
- Do not try to put a baby tooth back in. If unsure, keep it in milk or saliva.
- See us as soon as you can.
Adult teeth
If you or your child loses an adult tooth, act fast. The first hour matters most.
- Pick the tooth up by the crown. Avoid touching the root.
- If it’s dirty, rinse gently with milk, or with tap water for a second or two if milk isn’t available.
- If you can, place the tooth back in its socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it.
- If you can’t reinsert it, keep it in milk or saliva. Don’t let it dry out or sit in water.
- Call us straight away and come in immediately.
Lost fillings and crowns
A lost filling can leave the tooth sensitive and open to infection. If it happened while eating, rinse gently and call us for a same-day appointment. A loose or lost crown can often be re-cemented, or we’ll make you a new one. Either way, don’t leave it. The longer a tooth is exposed, the more damage it can take.
How to prevent a dental emergency
You can’t avoid every accident, but you can lower your risk:
- Wear a mouthguard for sport or any activity with a fall risk.
- Avoid biting hard foods like ice or hard lollies.
- Keep up regular checkups. We catch small cracks and weak fillings before they become emergencies.

If your tooth is broken, causing pain, or affecting your confidence, contact us straight away. You might need a filling replaced, a new crown, or a root canal to stop the pain returning. Dr Chou will talk you through every option so you can choose the right treatment.
How should I deal with a knocked-out tooth?
Getting to the dentist within an hour gives the tooth the best chance of being saved. Pick it up by the crown, avoid touching the root, and try to place it back in its socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in a glass of milk until you reach us. Dr Chou will aim to re-implant it as soon as you arrive.
How do I know if I need to go to the hospital instead?
If you’re struggling to breathe, swallow, or open your mouth, go straight to your nearest hospital emergency department. For everything else, from toothache to a knocked-out tooth, call us first.
